KNON 89.3 FM is an American non-commercial FM radio station that broadcasts a community radio format and which is licensed to Dallas, Texas.
This station also serves the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. KNON is owned by Agape Broadcasting Foundation, Inc. and their offices and studios are on Colt Road in Dallas, off Interstate 635.
KNON’s name comes from “NON-commercial” because it is a non-profit, listener-supported radio station. This means that its main source of income comes from on-air pledge drives, underwriting or sponsorships by local small businesses, and also from benefit events. All of this is enough to have a paid staff of four full-time people.
In a more technical way, we can say that KNON has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 55,000 watts and it broadcasts using HD Radio technology. Its transmitter is on West Belt Line Road in Cedar Hill among the towers for other Dallas-area FM and TV stations.
Regarding KNON program, the station airs a variety of music and music shows talking about Alt Country, Blues, Bluegrass, Classic Country, Cajun, Folk, Hip Hop, Indie Rock, Jazz, Latin Contemporary, R&B, Reggae, Reggaeton, Rockabilly, Southern Gospel, Tejano, Urban Gospel and Zydeco. As a curiosity, most of the DJs have three-hour shifts, once or twice a week.
Plus, some of the talk programming comprise once-a-week shows on workers rights and LGBTQ issues.
KNON started broadcasting as KCHU, which was also a non-commercial station, in 1975. They changed its name in 1979 when it was transferred to Agape Broadcasting. However, they remained silent for a year because of a license renewal year in Texas.
In 2011, the radio station was selected Best Radio Station in Dallas by The Dallas Observer and D-Magazine. And a year later, KNON was picked Best Radio Station for Music by the Dallas Observer.
